Factory, is a Design Sprint program which will bring the participants of various disciplines together to develop innovation and design-oriented solutions for the problem of false information.

 

CHALLANGE

Information societies have access to anything which arouse their curiosity, more rapidly than ever. We witness the disordering of information as its volume and speed increase. The most apparent symptoms of this issue welcome us as false information. Such a stratified problem can be eliminated only with the mutual approach of different disciplines.

PROCESS

The participants of various disciplines gather to generate solutions for the problem of false information.

They develop and test the solutions.

The solutions are presented to the community in final event.

 

 

The teams that want to implement own solutions are supported and "Factory" community is created.

PARTICIPATION

The individuals who want to make contribution to resolution of false information on internet and who;

• are interested in this field or open to self-development in this field

• have tendency to work in interdisciplinary groups

• have no obstacle to travel

can apply to Factory from various disciplines of media, communication and social sciences.

MARK STENCEL

Mentor - Ankara

Mark Stencel is co-director of the Reporters' Lab at Duke University, where he teaches journalism and tracks the spread and impact of political fact-checking in the U.S. and around the world. He was previously managing editor for digital news at National Public Radio, an independent, non-profit media network based in Washington. He also has been a senior editor and media executive at The Washington Post and at Congressional Quarterly Inc.

VALENTIN PENTCHEV

Mentor - İstanbul

Valentin (Val) Pentchev is the Information Technology Director of Indiana University Network Science Institute - IUNI. He is responsible for the maintenance and management of data and data access at the Observatory on Social Media, as well as development of Hoaxy, Botometer and a variety of other tools and applications that help visualization and better understanding of information diffusion on social media platforms.

MERVE KAVAS

Community Manager

Kavas is the coordinator of the incubation program of Istasyon TEDU Center for Social Innovation which is driven by social benefit and provides support to the actors who aim to establish a sustainable model. She is a graduate of Fellow Program within Entrepreneurship Foundation.

BİLGE NARİN

Decision Maker - Ankara

She is currently a PhD researcher at Ankara H.B. Veli University, Department of Journalism. She was completed master’s and doctoral degrees in journalism at Ankara University and enrolled in her second master’s degree at METU Science and Technology Policy Studies programme. She has been organising workshops for journalists about programming languages.

ERGİN ŞAFAK DİKMEN Ph.D.

Decision Maker - Ankara

He is working Ankara University, Faculty of Communication as a Lecturer. He completed his master degree in Anhalt University, Germany. He received his Ph.D. degree in Ankara University with his thesis entitled “The New Media Ecosystem of Turkish Television Broadcasting”. He is the founder and coordinator of Ankara University New Media Research Lab - NETlab.

    What is Factory?

    Factory is a Design Sprint program of teyit.org which brings the participants and experts of various disciplines together to generate innovation and design-oriented solutions for the problem of false information and disinformation on internet.

    What is Design Sprint?

    Design sprint is an innovative method which is developed by Google Ventures and used to accelerate the product and service development processes of numerous ventures. It embraces the design, testing and prototyping stages of new ideas as well.

    Who can participate?

    The individuals who want to make contribution to resolution of false information on internet and who are interested in this field or open to self-development in this field, have tendency to work in interdisciplinary groups and have no obstacle to travel can apply to Factory from various disciplines of media, communication and social sciences.

    Can I make application with my team?

    Factory is open to personal applications. Teams are formed based on the disciplines of participants. The participants are informed about the teams prior to event

    Is any solution offer required for attending the event?

    You do not need to develop any solution offer previously to attend the event. The stages of problem, solution and prototype will be experienced during the event.

    Can I participate even though I do not know developing prototype and I have some hesitation?

    You will prepare the simplest representation of the solution to be developed for the prototype. The coordinators and mentors will give you guidance during this process. No need to worry :)

    How much does the event cost?

    It is completely free.

    What should I bring?

    Motivation and laptop.

    Do I get to keep the project after the event?

    Yes. teyit.org will support you in providing data in application process of the solutions which are developed within Factory, introducing the solutions real users and directing the teams to support mechanisms based on their needs.

    Will all teams attend the final event?

    All teams which will participate in Ankara and İstanbul modules may attend the final event.

    Do you offer travel reimbursements?

    Travelling expenses of the participants whose applications for İstanbul module are approved will be reimbursed for the final event to be held in June in Ankara. Unfortunately, we do not render travelling support for the participation in other modules.

    Is the language of the event Turkish?

    Yes. Simultaneous translation will be provided during the speeches of foreign mentors.
